While browsing through my Instagram feed, I often come across images of people preparing food. Now, as much as I adore the unique views of various cuisines, I find this sort of content quite dull. One of the main reasons is that all of the recipes look the same. You know what, though? When it comes to cooking, I find it incredibly inspiring to see how others interpret the rules of thumb for various recipes. This is why I started thinking about creating an article series where I would inspire you to test out new ideas, techniques, and combinations of ingredients. So, sit back, relax, and get ready to create your masterpieces because that is exactly what this series is going to be about. Now, let's get started.
The Basics
Before we begin, let's discuss some of the basic kitchen equipment you will need to get started.
- Cutlery: You will need knives, cutting boards, and/or chef's scissors and spatulas for cutting your food. I prefer using my own handmade knives from Damascus steel because they are more flexible than the standard fare. The best thing about these knives is that they allow for easier cutting through tough foods like bones and connective tissues. If you get hooked, you can invest in a nice set of locking knives as well.
- Pots and pans: You will need to invest in some good pots and pans because the cheaper the better when it comes to this category. If you live in a smaller space, such as the city, you may want to consider buying a couple of smaller pots and pans to begin with so you can test out different recipes without having to worry about fitting everything in the oven at the same time.
- Baking equipment: If you are planning on baking any of your culinary masterpieces, you will need a good set of bakeware. Look for dishes that pop up in the kitchen of your favorite celebrity chef or food blogger to get an idea of what sorts of recipes you will be able to create. If you get hooked, you can invest in a few pieces of specialty bakeware that will make your baking experience more exquisite.
- Food processor: If you are the type of person who likes to prepare your food quickly and efficiently, you can't go wrong with a food processor. This device will help you chop vegetables and fruit with the push of a button while standing over the sink. If you are a beginner, you may want to start out simple and invest in a standard $20 food processor.
- Hand blender: If you are the type of person who likes to prepare their food using a tool, you can't go wrong with a hand blender. These appliances are incredibly popular because they allow you to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet by minimizing the amount of time you spend in the kitchen. You can buy a standard $20 hand blender for basic use or go for the gourmet type which costs a bit more money.
- Coffee machine: If you like to prepare your coffee fresh, you can't go wrong with having a coffee machine. This simple appliance will give you all the flavor you desire in your morning cup without having to prepare it the old-fashioned way. You can buy a basic $20 coffee maker or go for a fancier model which costs a little more money.
- Blender: If you are looking to prepare smoothies and margaritas, you can't go wrong with a blender. This device will allow you to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet by incorporating them into a creamy consistency. If you are a beginner, you can buy a standard $20 blender and use it to prepare delicious frosty shakes, which is what I use mine for every morning.
- Ice cream machine: If you like to make ice cream easily and frequently, you can't go wrong with having an ice cream machine. This simple appliance will give you all the ice cream you desire in a matter of minutes. You can buy a basic model which will cost you about $20 or go for a fancier model which costs a little more money.
- Dishwasher: If you live in a country where power outages are common, having a dishwasher is highly advisable. When storms roll through and the power goes out, you will be relieved to have a functioning dishwasher that can continue operating even when the electricity is off. The best part about a dishwasher is that it will make washing up easier and faster. A standard $20 dishwasher will tide you over for years of efficient and stylish kitchen use.
- Basket strainer: If you are the type of person who frequently cooks or cleanses large batches of food, you can't go wrong with a strainer basket. This is an essential item for any kitchen. It will allow you to drain your food without having to constantly sit and watch it while cooking or cleaning. The best part about a strainer basket is that it will keep your kitchen looking neat and tidy while also allowing you to keep an eye on what you are cooking. You can buy a basic $10 strainer basket or go for a fancier model which costs a little more money.
Now that you have an idea of the basics, let's move on to more unique items which you may need for your kitchen.
The Extras
While I would like to believe that every kitchen is different and requires a different set of equipment, in reality, most kitchens require only a few of these items to make it work.
There are a few items, however, which you may find helpful in your quest for culinary inspiration. These are some of the more expensive items to purchase but they are also some of the most useful. If you want to create mouthwatering, decadent meals, these items will help you do it.
