How to Make a Spatula

If you're looking for a new hobby, why not consider getting crafty and creating something new and innovative? In case you're wondering, scissors and spatulas are two tools that you might need in order to tackle this new hobby. While you could probably buy these items separately, it's much easier and a lot more fun to get crafty and make your own versions of these tools!

The first step is to determine what kind of design you want for your  scissors and spatulas . Keep in mind that you will need to actually use the tools to cut and scrape food, so the handles of the scissors and spatulas should be of good size and comfortable in your hands. There are many different kinds of designs that you could make, so think outside the box!

Scissors

For this tutorial, we will be making a pair of scissors with a handle made out of plastic sheeting. This is a very versatile and easy way to make the handles of your scissors, since you could use various colors and textures of plastic sheets to create a unique design!

Start by cutting a small slit along one of the long edges of a plastic sheet. Take a look at the picture below for a better idea of what I mean.

Cut another slit on the opposite edge of the plastic sheet. This is where you will insert the ends of the plastic sheet, which will be the handles of your scissors. The closer these slits are together, the more strength you will have when cutting. Try to space them about an inch or so apart.

Now it's time to decorate the handles of your scissors! Start by covering one of the short edges of the plastic sheet with a strip of tape as shown below.

This tape will keep the plastic sheet from curling when heated during the extrusion process. Make sure that the edges are well-covered with the tape so that it does not come off during use. Once you have covered the front edges of the plastic sheet, it's time to flip it over and do the same thing on the back edge.

When you are finished decorating both sides of the plastic sheet, it's time to fold it in half and stick it in the freezer for about half an hour. This will make it easier to roll it into a tube when hot-extruded later on.

You can now use your hot-extruder to pull the plastic sheet out and connect the two short edges. When pulling, be careful not to pull too fast or else the edges will become torn or frayed. As you can see from the picture below, this type of decoration creates a very unique design that will make your scissors stand out.

Spatulas

Now let's move on to making the spatulas. Just like with the scissors, you can use various colors and textures of plastic sheeting to add some variety to your spatulas. You want to bear in mind that when cutting, heat is always a factor, so the thinner the plastic sheet the better. There are many different designs that you could make for your spatula, but I would suggest starting small and working your way up. Think about what kind of shape you want for your spatula and experiment until you find what works best for you.

Conclusion

As you can see in the picture above, my spatulas come out a little longer than my scissors. This is simply a matter of personal preference as to which one you want to use for what kind of job. If you are making a large number of items, you can always cut them down using a jigsaw or even a small cutting tool. The important thing is that you have fun creating unique items and do your best to make them as easy to use as possible. It's never fun to use tools that are difficult to handle, so be sure to practice using the items you have made before your first cooking or barbequing experience. This will also help improve your overall comfort when using the tools. For example, if you feel nervous about using a pair of scissors, you might not put them to good use and this can quickly turn into a dangerous situation if you have any accidents during food preparation. Always be careful when using any tool and take breaks when needed to prevent damage to your knuckles or other body parts.
